Kenny and Dad have a serious conversation about the way things are in the world. Kenny saw some white people being cruel to black children. He really didn't understand this. Do you think children should be exposed to what is going on in the world? Or do you think children should be protected from the bad things that happen? Why do you think Dad was telling  Kenny about this?

  1. I think children should be protected from the bad things that happen and exposed to what’s going onto the world. Their life could be taken from a small bad thing, or a big problem if they are not protected from the bad things. I think this because if something dangerous happens then they could run out, unknowing of what is happening, and then get harmed. I think children should be exposed to what is going on because then they will know what is happening,(or will) and know to stay out of it, so they wouldn’t get hurt. That’s why I think children should both be protected from bad things that happen, and exposed to the world.

  2. I think kids should know what's going on in the world for many reasons. To explain, kids should not think everything is always perfect, because that is just how life is, not perfect. When they grow up they will think of the world as perfect because they are not informed about bad things that can actually happen. When they find those things out they will be horrified, so they need to learn early. In addition, knowing what's actually going on is also protecting you from getting into it. You might not know what is going on and find out when you get stuck in it and not know what to do. So, it is also protecting you. Nevertheless, knowing what is going on around the world will make you informed. It will just make you understand what is happening and so you are not clueless on thing that are happening. These explain why I think that kids should know what is going on.

  3. In my opinion children should be involved in what is happening in the world. It is important for America's youth to know what is happening. An opinion materialized from an unreliable source can affect what a kid can think, and I believe that children are better off hearing what is happening, rather than only having other people's opinions. Kenny's dad was telling him this because I think that he might believe in the same thing that I do.

  4. I think that children should be protected but they still need to know about bad things that happen so that when they are older he knows what can happen. I think that the dad was telling Kenny about this so he would understand what happens to some people.

  5. I think that Mr. Watson had this conversation with Kenny because he realized that he was going to find out sooner or later, and he decided to make that jump happens sooner. I think that children should be exposed to all the news in the world because this is the world we live in. Every person standing on this planet deserves and has the rights to know what is going on around them. You don't want to be kept in a little bubble, knowing nothing about what you could do to help, do you? They truly deserve to know the things going on around them, as does everyone. Everyone has the rights to step in and help. How can you do that when you don't even know what you're doing? That's what I thought. If you want to change the society, if you want to rock it will good deeds, you better know what you're doing first.

  6. I think that children should be protected from the problems in the world. To begin with, telling kids the bad things that are happening in the world will cause them to stay out of the problem. However, protecting kids from the problem will also keep them from staying away. In addition, not telling the kids about the problem means you can shield them away from the problem and protect the from it. Lastly, you can keep kids away from the place where the problem is, like Flint, Michigan is from Birmingham, Alabama.

    1. That totally makes sense because children should enjoy their child hood before they are exposed to the world we live in

  7. I think that kids should be told the truth. Even though it might scar them for life, it will at least let them understand. I had to find out the hard way that my dog Lucky had died. It was depressing but at least I wouldn't be shaming my parents for telling me he had gone to a butterfly farm when he really just died.

  8. I think at the time the book was set children should be protected from that stuff. I think this because that was when racism was HUGE! It shows when two white people throw a bomb into a church. That would never happen today. They should also be protected from racism because Kenny’s dad didn’t want Kenny to feel like it could happen to him.

    1. I sure hope that it would not happen now. I think that it could happen, but it's not as likely to happen now. I agree that they should be protected so that they are not as scared but I think that they need to know what is happening around them.

  9. I think that Kenny's dad told him this because he wanted Kenny to understand how dangerous the world can be. This could make Kenny be more safe and not get into hot water

  10. I think children shouldn't be protected from bad things that happen because I think everyone has the right to know what's going on in the world. I think this because it's not fair if the world might get flooded and children all over the world think nothing bad is ever going to happen to them. I also think Kenny's dad told him this because I think he agreed with me in saying every kid has a right to know.

    1. Yeah, I agree with you. It makes sense that kids should be able to know what is going on in the world, but maybe they should be protected so that they aren't as scared.

  11. I think children should be exposed because if they learn about it then they can learn how to stand up for themselves and be a hero. If they be protected then how will they learn how to stand up for themselves? But if they get exposed then they will learn how to stand up.

  12. Bad things happen in the world. And kids need to know what is going on in order to survive later in their life. If kids do not know what is going on and that the world is not just happiness and love. Bad, evil people. Children need to know how to tell if someone is a bad person so that can stay away. Kenny was told about the scenario going on in Birmingham because his father felt that his son was old enough and mature enough to know. On the other hand he would never tell joey because she is young and fragile.

  13. In my opinion, It depends on the situation and the maturity of the child whether or not a child is exposed to the world. For example, It’s not a good idea to tell a child Joey’s age that there are cruel people in the world that kill little black girls for no reason. However, it might be a good idea to tell Byron and even Kenny so that they understand and can maybe even help do something about it. This kind of knowledge will also help Byron and Kenny when they are adults so that they don’t get a rude awakening when it’s time for them to fend for themselves. I think Mr. Watson told Kenny because he thought that it was time for kenny to know so that he can do something about all of the racism. Also, I think Mr. Watson told Kenny because he knew that Kenny was mature enough.

    1. That makes sense. I agree that kids that are younger should not be exposed to it until they are older. I also agree that the reason Mr. Watson told Kenny was because he would handle the situation correctly.

  14. I think that some children should know and some shouldn't because some kids might make a difference and change bad things but others might be scared or sad and it will only hurt them. So if you just tell the right kids then I say yes.

  15. I think that children need to know what is going on in the world because if they are protected all of their life than when the real world comes they will not be prepared, mentally or physically. But there also needs to be a line of what kids know. Kids that know too much can also be a bad thing. I think that Dad was telling Kenny because Kenny is going to have to deal with the real world.

  16. I think that children have the right to know what’s going on in the world around them. They may get scared but something that happens might be a historic event. Children should know that, especially because it could affect their lives. I think Dad was telling Kenny about this because he trusted him and knew Kenny could handle it.

  17. I do think the kids should be exposed to the cruelty. I think they should be exposed because it can make them more aware. If they are more aware they can avoid problems. I think Mr. Watson told Kenny about this stuff because they were about to leave to go to Alabama and he didn’t want Kenny to be shocked and scared if he saw it happen. I think Kenny’s father was playing it safe to tell Kenny about it.

  18. I think the little children shouldn't be exposed to what is really happening in the real world until they are nine or ten, because it ruins their childhood.I think Mr.Watson told Kenny about what happened because he felt he needed to or he would be a confused kid.

  19. I think that children should know what is going on in the world around them. I think they should know so they a prepared. If they are prepared they know how to react to these problems if they happen again. I think Mr.Watson told Kenny because he would know what is happening around him. I think Mr. Watson made the right decision telling Kenny what happened.

  20. I think that ideally kids should be exposed to things that are going on in the world around them, but in an age appropriate way. For example, I think that younger children should learn about what's fair, and safe, and how to treat others with compassion and respect. Some of these lessons can be taught by using examples from current events. Older children can begin to tackle issues of injustice such as racism, discrimination, and cruelty as they are emotionally and ideologically ready, and with the support of caring and educated family and community members.

I will, however, say that it is because of the privilege that comes from being a white, middle class, American citizen that I have the choice not to expose my children to many instances of cruelty and inhumanity in the community around us. I have the ability take my children to places that feel safe and welcoming all of the time if I choose to. It's horrible to think about, but Kenny's parents don't have the same privilege because of the color of their skin. Unfortunately, in order to keep Kenny as safe as they can, I think they need to expose him to some of the negative, and terrible, reality that surrounds Kenny so that he can avoid danger. I think that Kenny's parents are doing the best they can to keep their son safe.

  21. I think that parents should share what’s going on in the world with their kids. Could it be scary, yes, but if you just protect your child and never tell them anything it is harder for them to go off to college or to a public school because they have been sheltered all their life. I think the dad told Kenny this because I think that Kenny wanted to know why these people could hate innocent little girls. I think of it this way where we live it’s safe, we live in a little bubble, so if parents think it is better not to tell their kids what is going on when they leave home to go somewhere and they see someone being treated unfairly they might not have a clue and not realize that this is happening all over the world.

  22. I think children should be protected from the bad things in the world for some reasons. To begin, I think that children should be protected from the bad things in the world, because if you are their parent, you wouldn’t want them to remember that they lived in a bad environment when they were young, to see how people treat them just because they don’t think well of them. You would want them to remember the good things that make you feel apart of the world, like you belong. In addition, it is not good for children to feel like they don’t belong, and people would kill them for it. My mom always said,”You will know who people really are, if you just try to look deep down inside them, and realize that they are just like you.” I feel like her saying that makes every single African-American white at the same time. It makes me feel good. Lastly, kids should be protected from what harm is in the world because they would notice the bad, and terrible things that happen in the world, and they would become one of those people who only saw the bad in other people, and do terrible things because of it. I think Dad was telling Kenny this because he wanted him to understand what the world was like, before he had to face it on his own without knowing. I also think Byron knew it the whole time too, and was trying to protect Kenny and Joey from it the whole time, until he knew Dad would tell at least Kenny.

  23. I, very strongly, believe that parents should tell their kids about this kind of stuff for a few reasons. First of all, kids need to know what's going on with our world because kids have to learn to be tough and not have the dark side of our world jump out at them suddenly.
Also, kids should know because they need to know that there is struggle in the world and that you have to fight to get what you want.

  24. I think it was OK to tell Kenny the stuff about the world. To start, kids like Kenny should know what the world is like as long as you don’t give too much information to a kid. Also, if kids are exposed to this info they can get a better picture of what to do. For example, if your kid is a troublemaker and if you tell him the information they might realise that what they are doing can’t stay the same way or they are in for a rough future. Lastly, if they know that they can be in more adult conversations so they can learn more about the world. If you tell them and they listen to some adult conversations then they can paint an even better picture of the world. I think Kenny’s dad told him that stuff because I think he thinks Kenny is old enough to handle it and then can see why his parents are sending Byron to grandma sands’s house. Maybe the dad also wants to avoid any additional questions too.
