On page 92, Joetta asks Byron, "Byron, why won't you behave? Why won't you think about what's going to happen to you when you do something wrong? Why do you always do stuff to get people mad at you?" Byron doesn't have time to answer because Dad walks in the door?
What about you? Why do you think Byron acts this way? Why does anybody do stuff that will get them in trouble? Do you have any solutions that could improve Byron's behavior?

  1. I think Byron acts this way because he think he is “Daddy Cool” and a teenager, and can do anything he wants. I think this because throughout the book Kenny calls Byron, “Daddy Cool” because he think he can do anything and thinks he is cool, and nobody can stop him. Another reason is maybe because he has pressure. Byron has pressure because I think his parents expected him to be nice and be a role model to Kenny and Joey. I think one solution that could improve Byron’s behavior is to just treat him nicely. I’m pretty sure this will work because when my family is nice to my 15 year old brother, Jack, he usually gets nice and clams down.

    1. I agree with you. Maybe if his family is nice to him he will calm down.

  2. I maybe think that Byron acts this way for two reasons. To explain, he might do it because he is the oldest and he wants to show off and be different from Kenny and Joetta. For instance, he might feel like being the oldest kid in the family you should be different so he tries to show off. His way of showing off and not good though! In addition, he might not have a lot of friends so he takes it out on other people. For example, he has Buphead, but he might want some true friend. Maybe people don’t like him so he tries to take it out on the people that won’t be his friend. Some ways that he could deal with this are, he could try and get some good influential friends. Also maybe he should try not to act so cool and let loose. He could start and try it at his house and then start doing it everywhere else. These are why I think By acts mean and some ways to help him fix his attitude.

    1. I agree with you. Maybe if he got a good friend it would help more.

  3. I think Byron is a lot like a lot of us. He acts before he thinks! that more often than not will get us into trouble! I also think he is influenced by other people instead of using what he knows about "right and wrong" and "actions and consequences." If I could give Byron any advice it would be to be a good example for those around him. He has great leadership qualities...lead for "good" not "bad"!

  4. I think Byron acts this way because he tries to be cool. Apparently then, bad is the new cool. Also, he acts before he thinks about the (horrible) consequences. A solution for his behavior is maybe send him away for a while, like a school that teaches children how to behave. Another solution is for Daniel and Wilona Watson to punish him worse than they ever have. This will teach him to not act like that!

  5. I believe Byron acts they way he does is because he feels obligated to be a juvenile delinquent. As you know By is 13. Buphead, assuming, is also 13. Buphead has been a huge influence on Byron throughout the book. Buphead has a bad behavior. By feels as if he needs to be just like his best buddy. This is my reasoning for Byron’s bad attitude.People do thing to get them in trouble because they feel as if it is trending. Or at least nowadays. At Clarksville elementary everyone is a bully. Kids at school want to fit in with everybody. It takes a lot of courage to stand out. By just does not have that courage. Thus, his bad actions. Suggestions I have for Byron are. Getting rid of his main bad influence. Buphead. He also could talk to his parents and make an agreement on the thing he is pleading to do. Like getting a conk. He could have asked his parents and made some sort of agreement to have a “fake” conk. All kids, and adults, make mistakes. Yet by has made too many inexcusable mistakes.

  6. I think that Byron acts the way he does, because he is being badly influenced by the people that he is friends with. Byron is constantly spending his time with Buphead. In my opinion I believe that Byron is only trying to impress his friend so that he can reach a higher level of " cool." Byron only thinks about his social status and not his family. One way that Daniel and Wilona can solve Byron's problems is by trying to get him to have different friends, they seem to not pay attention to who Byron likes spending his time with. They seem to only think about what he has done more that what was causing it.

  7. I think Byron acts his way for two reasons one of them is just because he thinks hes daddy cool. But the other one is that he wants attention so people will notice him and maybe that's tied in on why he's a bully. That's why I think Byron behaves bad

  8. I think Byron acts that we because he wants to hide his real self. He wants to prove to everybody that he’s not just a normal teenager boy that gets told what to do all the time, that he chooses for himself, and tries to be tough and show that he is in charge, and no one can change that. He doesn’t like to show it when he is scared, sad, or lonely, so he just tries to make it look like he is being mean, and not that he is hurt. I think he does it to get into trouble because he trying to show everyone that he won’t listen to anyone but him and his friend. I don’t really have any solutions, but the one he is getting right now, going to Grandma Sands for the whole summer.

  9. I think Bryon acts this way because he tries to hard to be cool. I know this because all his friends (Buphead) and even his family as a joke call him “Daddy Cool”. For example, when he put chemicals in his hair he did it so his hair would be more cool. Solutions that could get him in less trouble would have to be stop trying to be cool.

  10. I think that Byron acts this way because he wanted attention. I think he needed attention so he was bad so everyone would hang around him. A solution to Byron's behavior is to do something he hates. For example, go to a different school or something like that. At first I would try this once and if he still does not learn his lesson I would do it continuously until he acts better. Hopefully this will teach Byron a lesson to act better.

  11. I think Byron acts this way because I bet when he was younger he was getting bullied. So, he became the bully to show everyone that they can no longer bully him. I also think that Byron does bad things because he always wants to get things that he wants. But, his parents won't always let him get what he wants because it would cost them to much money. So, he started doing bad things to get what he wanted. For example, he stole money from his parents to buy Swedish Cremes. Finally, I don't have any solutions for Byron in his very sticky situation.

  12. Byron acts this way because of the way it impacts people. Sometimes people are impressed, and sometimes people are scared. Byron seems to care about what other people think of him. People do things that will get them in trouble because they don't think about the consequences or sometimes they just don't care about the consequences. A solution to improve Byron’s behavior is that he should think about what could happen and he should make sure that he knows how bad things could get if he does this behavior.

  13. I think that Byron acts this way to get attention drawn to himself, but not in the good way. Byron is probably doing what he has done just to have everyone paying attention to him. Some ways he could improve in this is talking to his parents about how to change his extremely bad habits of playing with matches and bullying others. He could also try to break them by discipline: enrolling into military school, etc. He could always just watch what he does and make sure he isn't doing anything he shouldn't be.

  14. I think that Byron doesn’t get what the consequences could be, and he might not know how to act good. Byron needs a good role model. But he did not ever have one. I think that most people that get in trouble do not think about what they are doing. They do not fully think about the situation. I think that Byron needs to move to Alabama and needs to stay their. He needs to know that he is going to have to change. He should not come back to Flint, but maybe start somewhere fresh. This could maybe change how Byron acts.

  15. I think that Byron acts this way because he has just became a teen. When you become a teen, many things could happen, you could be stupid and make stupid decisions or be smart and make smart decisions. There's endless possibilities. And to stop his behavior, give him a cruel punishment so he doesn't do anything stupid again. And Byron's mom does just that by sending him to her mother's house to whip Byron back into shape.

  16. I think Byron acts this way because he is very angry from things. He wants to get his anger out on bad things. Some solutions I have many solutions for Byron. First, play a sport. If he gets into like football or lacrosse then he can get all his anger out on that sport. Another solution I have is take a walk. If he takes a walk then he can clear his mind and not do bad things. These are the solution I have for Byron.

  17. Byron acts horrible because he probably doesn’t know how to control it.I think this because the does it all the time, but if he knew how to control it even a little the would do it much much less. Some ways you can improve Byron’s behavior is to bring him to a psychologist, or just never let him see Buphead ever again, because I bet Buphead is making him do all this crazy stuff in the first place.

  18. I think that Byron's behavior could be improved if he just tried. Byron doesn't seem to care enough to be better, he just, does things that will get him in trouble without considering the consequences, like dying his hair or playing with fire, if he thought about it he would realize that maybe its not a good idea to light toilet paper on fire inside a flammable building.

  19. I think Byron acts this way because he thinks he is different and that he can act how he wants and its better to show no fear than to be labeled as a trustworthy kid.

  20. I think that I don't behave or think about consequences because I just do whatever seems the best, and sometimes bad things seem great. I feel like Byron acts this way because he thinks it will make people like him more.I do not know why anybody, including myself does that kind of thing, but my guess is because something is always clouding your thoughts, and it usually seems like the best choice. I have one solution to fix Byron's behavior. It is to, well, take him to his strict grandma's house, like his parents did.

  21. I think people do stuff that gets them in trouble for attention. When somebody gets in trouble people will usually turn around and look to see who is going to get it. I think Byron acts this way for attention and laughter. He is the goddess of the school and he got this way by fighting. When he is beating someone up he enjoys making them feel sorry and he shows them who’s boss. He gets attention because people are scared of him. A solution would be to stay out of Byron’s path. I don’t think it is the smartest solution to pick a fight with By. You could also let him think he is boss.

  22. I think that Byron acts this way because he doesn't want to be annoyed and he wants extra attention so he does things to stand out and he gets in trouble a lot while he's doing it. Another reason why is because of Buphead's influence and how Buphead acts cool so he thinks that he has to act cool to.

    1. I think you made a good point about Byron wanting to stand out, and wanting attention. I agree that he is motivated by both of these things.

  23. I think Byron acts the way he does for 2 reasons. First of all, it is just a stage people go through in their lives, being a jerk and a "Juvenile Delinquent" as the say. The next, and final reason I think Byron acts this way is because he wants to be feared by people and therefore, have more people under his control.

  24. I think Byron acts this way because he doesn't want to be apart of the weird Watsons. He wants to get respect and in order to do that he has to be mean. For example, look at Kenny he gets bullied all the time and he isn't mean. People do stuff that will get in trouble because they are either influenced by some one else or they do it to be cool and be know by people. A solution to stop him is to either stop him from being influenced like banning him to not see some one. Also, you could show him that his actions can't belong in the outside world. This is what I think of Byron and how he could turn himself around.

  25. Byron probably acts this way for the fun. He tends to stop when the person ignores him. That or he doesn’t care one bit. He carelessly lights fires without thinking about the consequences. Leading to bad things. When he’s not supposed to do something he does it anyways. Mostly because he's not supposed to. Breaking the rules is what he likes to do and it’s a habit. That's why he does all those bad things.

  27. I think Byron acts like this because he wants attention. He believes that doing things like skipping school, beating up other kids, and breaking rules will make him popular. Although his strategy does work out, he is also feared by other kids at Clark. Also, I think that he does these things to be cool. He is friends with Buphead, the coolest kid around, and he believes that breaking rules with Buphead will make him cool along with everybody else. I think that convincing Byron that fame and popularity isn’t everything would make his school and home record a whole lot better.

  28. I think Byron acts this way because he would rather bully then be bullied and the people he chooses to hang out with are bullies. Based on some of his behavior I don’t think he does it just to be mean. I think he does it to protect himself from others being mean to him. He could be choosing to be mean on the outside when he is just protecting his family and standing up for them. Now that they are in Alabama he is a lot nicer then he was in Flint, he is not being a bully he is actually getting along with everybody, so advice that I would give Byron is to try and influence his friends to act just like he is in Alabama when and if they go back to Flint.

  29. I think Byron acts the way he does for a mixture of reasons. First, I think he acts this way because he wants to impress his friends. An example of this would be dying his hair to impress Buphead. Second, I think Byron acts this way because he doesn't think before he acts. An example of this would be when he threw the cookie at the bird and ended up accidentally killing it. Finally, I think Byron acts this way because he doesn't have a lot of empathy. It's hard for him to see things from other peoples' perspectives. An example of this would be when he charged the cookies to his parents' account at the grocery store.

I think that the reasons that Byron gets in trouble are the same reasons that get a lot of people in trouble. Many people do things to impress others, or act impulsively or without empathy.

I don't know that there is a fool-proof solution to Byron's negative behavior, but I do think that learning to stop and think before acting, and learning to put himself in another person's shoes, would help. Hopefully, Byron's grandma will be able to help him with these things when he visits with her. He won't have any friends to impress (at least not right away) so it might be a little bit easier for him to work on his impulsivity and empathy.
